The Costa Brava and the Bay of Roses offer several dog-friendly beaches – perfect for a day trip from the holiday home.
The closest official dog beach, just a 10-minute drive away. Dogs are welcome all year round.
L'Estartit, about 15 minutes away, also has official dog-friendly beach sections.
The expansive bay between Empuriabrava and Roses is very long and sparsely built-up. Dogs are tolerated at many stretches – great for a free run away from the main beaches.
Note: Official rules may vary by season and municipality. Restrictions are generally lighter outside peak season.
Dog walks around Sobrestany
Five walks and hikes we recommend to guests with dogs - from the trail at the door to a trip to the coast. Driving times are from the holiday home.
🥾 Montgrí Massif from the door
The trails into the Montgrí start right behind the house: scrubland, pines, rocky ridges and, at the top, views of the Medes Islands. There is hardly any shade and no water on the ridges - in summer go early in the morning or in the evening, and carry enough water for your dog.
🌿 Along the Ter towards the sea
From Torroella a level path follows the Ter towards its mouth, lined with riverside woodland and plenty of waterbirds. You choose the length - just turn back when you have had enough. Important: the beach at the river mouth (La Gola) and La Pletera are protected areas where dogs are not allowed.
💧 Along the Fluvià from L'Armentera to the sea
Wide paths lead from L'Armentera along the Fluvià towards Sant Pere Pescador, past riverside woodland and the river island Illa d'en Caramany. Small spots on the bank let your dog drink and cool off - our shadiest walk for hot days. The river mouth lies within the Aiguamolls Natural Park: keep your dog on a lead there. Sant Pere Pescador has no dog beach.
🦩 Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park
One of Catalonia's most important wetlands, between the Fluvià and the Muga. From the El Cortalet visitor centre, level paths lead to hides where you can watch storks, herons and flamingos. Dogs on a lead and on the paths only.
🌊 Camí de Ronda from Calella to Llafranc
The old coastal path links the fishing villages of Calella and Llafranc over rocks and small coves, partly shaded by pines. Dogs on a lead. In summer the path is crowded and the Palafrugell beaches are closed to dogs - the walk is at its best from autumn to spring.
As of October 2026. Rules in natural parks and on beaches change, and signs on site take precedence. Please always pick up after your dog.

Is there a dog meadow or off-lead area?
Yes – the fully fenced garden with the large lawn around the pool serves as a private dog meadow. Dogs can move freely and safely without a lead. No need for a public dog run – your own meadow is right at the house.
What other dog beaches are nearby?
Besides the closest dog beach Platja del Rec del Molí in l'Escala (10 min), there are official dog beaches in l'Estartit (about 15 min) and the expansive Bay of Roses between Empuriabrava and Roses, where dogs are tolerated along many stretches.
Are there dog-friendly restaurants nearby?
Yes. Particularly recommended are L'Horta in Bellcaire d'Empordà with a garden terrace, and Ca la Nati in Albons, where dogs are welcome both on the terrace and indoors. Many other restaurants allow dogs on their terraces.
Where can I walk my dog in the shade in summer?
By the rivers: the paths along the Fluvià from L'Armentera (approx. 20 min) and along the Ter from Torroella de Montgrí (15 min) are flat and lead through riverside woodland, and along the Fluvià your dog can drink and cool off on the way. On the Montgrí trails from the door there is hardly any shade on the ridges - in summer only go early in the morning or in the evening.
What do I need to know about processionary caterpillars and grass awns?
Pine processionary caterpillars cross the ground of pine woods in long lines, mainly from January to April. Their stinging hairs are dangerous for dogs, especially on the tongue and mouth: do not let your dog sniff them, and after contact rinse the mouth with plenty of water (do not rub) and go straight to the vet in l'Escala (10 min). From May to August meadows and verges are dry, and grass awns easily work their way into paws, ears and noses. Check paws and ears briefly after every walk.
Do I need to protect my dog against leishmaniasis and ticks?
Yes. Leishmaniasis is transmitted by sand flies throughout the Mediterranean, including Catalonia. They are active roughly from May to October, mainly at dusk and at night. Before your trip, ask your vet about a repellent collar or spot-on that also works against ticks. During your stay it helps to keep your dog indoors in the evening and at night.
What documents does my dog need to travel to Spain?
Within the EU: an EU pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. After a first vaccination, you must wait at least 21 days before entering. Additional rules apply when travelling from non-EU countries such as the UK - ask your vet in good time. An ID tag with your phone number on the collar is a good idea. Breeds classed as potentially dangerous in Spain must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public.
Staying longer: wintering on the Costa Brava
From November to March the beach restrictions for dogs no longer apply and the coast is empty. From 14 nights the price drops, from 30 nights considerably.
